about

The story of "Goldilocks and the three bears" has its origins in an old tale that was told in the 18th century. But maybe it is even older.
At the begginning, the title was just "Three Bears" and the heroine was not a little girl but a nasty old lady.
The first recorded version of this story dates from 1831. The author was Eleanor Mure. She created a booklet as a birthday present fot her four-year-old nephew. She wrote the text in verse and accompanied it with pretty and mysterious drawings. In this version of the story, when the bears discover the old woman's presence, they throw her into the fireplace and then attempt to drown her. Finally, they "chuck her aloft on St Paul's church yard steeple" (E.Mure, 1831).
A second publication was created in 1837. The author was Robert Southey. This time the old lady was not mistreated by the bears at the end but managed to escape. What became of her afterwards ? No one knows.
Joseph Cundall published a storybook in 1850 : "Pleasure books for young children". In this one was the story of the three bears. For the first time, the old lady became a little girl. Joseph Cundall told that this story was a very old Nursery tale and he explained that he had changed the old lady for a little girl because according to him the story was "better known with Silver-Hair" (J.Cundall, 1850). He added that there were already a lot of stories with old ladies.
Step by step, the little girl who was first called Silver Hair became Silverlocks then Goldenlocks and finally Goldilocks. Now the title of the story is "Goldilocks and the three bears".
According to specialists, this old story takes its origin from another tale called Scrapefoot. In this story, the hero is a fox who enters a castle belonging to three bears. At the end of the story, the fox is thrown out the window.
This tale has surely a link with "Reynard the Fox" which was "a literary cycle of medieval allegorical Dutch, English, French and German fables" (Wikipedia). The oldest version of this text known to date dates from the 12th century.
The origin of this story is therefore very old. It's been in memory for a long time and surely has a hidden meaning. It is up to everyone to meditate on this strange tale to find their own truth.
